Mike McColgan’s life has taken many twists and turns in the past two decades, serving in the U.S. Army during the first Gulf War and starting two punk bands wrapped around a stint with the Boston Fire Department.
After his time in the military, McColgan was one of the founding members of Dropkick Murphys, singing on the Irish-punk band’s 1998 debut album, “Do or Die.” He left that band shortly afterward to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a firefighter. The lure of music was too strong, however, and he left the BFD in 2002 to form his present band, The Street Dogs.
McColgan doesn’t have any regrets about his choices in life, even as Dropkick Murphys went on to bigger and better things.
“I roll the dice in life. I don’t play it safe,” McColgan said in a recent phone interview from Long Beach, Calif. “I don’t want to be on a porch when I’m 70 years old saying, `I coulda, woulda, shoulda.’
“I’m going to take the chances and I’m not afraid to succeed or fail. Win, lose or draw, I’m going to take my chances. That’s how I live life, for better or worse.”
And things have been getting better for McColgan and his bandmates — bassist Johnny Rioux, guitarists Marcus Hollar and Tobe Bean III and drummer Paul Rucker — as they released their fifth album on Aug. 31. The self-titled disc is the group’s second on Hellcat Records, the label run by Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion fame and Rancid’s Tim Armstrong.
“It’s been great,” McColgan said of his time on Hellcat. “I mean, you don’t have any suits in the studio telling you what songs to do or how to write or how to look. You can be what you actually want to be and I think that’s rare in this day and age.
