A new photo of former NIRVANA bandmates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, along with producer Butch Vig, can be found below. The trio is collaborating on the next album from Grohl’s post-NIRVANA band FOO FIGHTERS, due out in 2011. Grohl broke the news to the BBC in England, saying only that Novoselic will make a guest appearance on bass. The album is being produced by Vig, who produced NIRVANA’s landmark 1991 album, “Nevermind”, which also marked Grohl’s recording debut with the iconic alternative trio.

According to The Pulse of Radio, Grohl and Novoselic have not recorded together since NIRVANA cut its final song back in 1993, “You Know You’re Right”. Grohl recalled the sessions for that track. “We had some time off before a tour, and Kurt wanted to go in and demo some stuff, so I said, ‘Hey, why don’t we do it at this studio down the street from my house,’” he said. “And we went down there, and we had three days booked. Kurt came in the last day and we were like, ‘Okay, what do you wanna do?’ And Kurt said, ‘Well, why don’t we do that song we’ve been doing at soundcheck?’ And so we rehearsed it, I think, once, and then recorded it. Kurt did three or four vocal takes, and that was it.”

NIRVANA’s legendary August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the U.K.’s Reading festival will make its official debut on CD and DVD on November 3, followed by a vinyl edition on November 17. Titled “Nirvana Live At Reading”, the set will come as both a separate CD and DVD, as well as a deluxe CD/DVD package. The show has been circulated on bootlegs for years, but the DVD will feature a pristine copy of the original film, while the audio portion will be taken from the original recordings.

NIRVANA’s Reading show featured early performances of several songs that would not make their recorded debut until 1993’s “In Utero” album: “All Apologies”, “Dumb” and “Tourette’s”. The show also included rare cover tunes and obscure songs from the band’s pre-”Nevermind” days, as well as nearly every song from that 1991 breakthrough release.

CobainToday, Activision has confirmed that a Kurt Cobain character will be playable in Guitar Hero 5 (out September 1st), alongside music legends Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and the still living Shirley Manson of Garbage and Matt Bellamy of Muse. Two Nirvana tracks, Nevermind’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and a live version of “Lithium,” from their 1992 headlining slot at England’s Reading festival, also join the game’s set list, a first for the seminal band that defined the grunge era. “Kurt Cobain is one of the most recognizable frontmen in rock & roll history,” reads a statement released this morning, “and it’s an honor to have two of Nirvana’s masterpieces included in Guitar Hero 5.”
