Kerrang! magazine conducted an interview with DEFTONES drummer Abe Cunningham and vocalist Chino Moreno at the Reading festival, which is being held August 26-28 in Reading, England. You can now watch the chat below.

DEFTONES recently began laying the groundwork for its seventh studio release, tentatively due next year. Vocalist Chino Moreno told Billboard magazine that all five members of the group were recording their own ideas already, but that DEFTONES music doesn’t really emerge until the full band gets into a room together and starts jamming.

He explained, “We find that when we actually get together in a rehearsal spot where there’s no distractions and we can work together cohesively as a band, that’s really when we’re writing songs.”

2010’s “Diamond Eyes” has been one of DEFTONES’ most successful outings. The set’s latest single, “You’ve Seen The Butcher”, was a Top 15 rock radio hit.

PARAMORE frontwoman Hayley Williams joined DEFTONES on stage yesterday (Sunday, June 27) at the Rock-A-Field festival in Roeser, Luxembourg to perform the DEFTONES song “Passenger”.

Fan-filmed video footage of her appearance can be viewed below.

DEFTONES’ new album, “Diamond Eyes”, sold 62,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 6 on The Billboard 200 chart.

DEFTONES’ last album, “Saturday Night Wrist”, opened with 76,000 units back in November 2006 to land at position No. 10 on The Billboard.

DEFTONES

Hard rock thrives on conflict and chaos, and no band has found more beauty and soaring aggression within those ingredients than Deftones.

The Sacramento group has operated like this for years, a functioning dysfunctional group of musicians who nearly broke apart (again) during the struggle and combat of their last album, 2006’s “Saturday Night Wrist,” which nonetheless ended up as another stirring fusion of atmosphere and grinding guitar.

After the band finished recording, bassist Chi Cheng said at the time: “It’s a really onerous, painful process … but it seems that kind of tension does make great music for us.”

Four years later, band members convened for a final day of rehearsals in North Hollywood before leaving on a tour that began in Mexico City last weekend. They recently completed a new album, “Diamond Eyes,” set for release on Tuesday. But Deftones did so without Cheng, 39, who now lies in a semiconscious state following a 2008 car accident in Santa Clara.

In six days time, we should know a little more about BlackDiamondSkye.com, a site launched this week that several websites are speculating will go down this fall, and if the rumor is true, the only question remaining is: Who’ll be the headliner? Alice in Chains, Deftones and Mastodon … on the same bill? That’s this week’s hot rumor.

While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, chances are this rumor will end up being fact in six days, when the countdown on BlackDiamondSkye reaches zero. Reasons why it could be true? The site name alone is a dead giveaway. Last year, Alice In Chains released their comeback LP ‘Black Gives Way To Blue.’ The Deftones released ‘Diamond Eyes’ in May, and Mastodon’s last effort, ‘Crack the Skye,’ dropped in 2009. There’s also a YouTube video, which seems to be promoting the site itself. The clip is a mash-up of imagery and audio, but at times, you can distinctly hear the music of all three bands.

Ever since the   Deftones  initially announced details regarding ‘Diamond Eyes,’ their first studio offering since bassist Chi Cheng’s tragic car accident which left him in a semi-comatose state, the release date for the record has changed. First, we were told the disc would be out on April 27. Then, it was pushed back three weeks to May 18, which has been the set-in-stone date for more than a month. But now, things have changed again.

Perhaps prompted by the March 18 leak of the album, reportedly by an online music journalist, the album has now been moved forward to a May 4 release, which is fantastic news for fans who can’t wait much longer for the new D-Tones tunes.

Meanwhile, the Deftones have started taking pre-orders for ‘Diamond Eyes’ online, with those who order the disc now an instant download of the M83 remix of the album track ‘Rocket Skates.’

To psych fans up for the new disc, the band released a teaser trailer for ‘Diamond Eyes,’ which features an awesome picture of an owl.

MÖTLEY CRÜE’s Tommy Lee, THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN’s Greg Puciato, LINKIN PARK’s Mike Shinoda, XZIBIT and CYPRESS HILL are among the guest musicians who performed with the DEFTONES last night (Thursday, November 19) at the first of two benefit shows for DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng.

Chi has been in a semi-conscious state since being involved in a horrific accident in November 2008, and his family has accumulated an overwhelming amount of medical bills that insurance does not entirely cover. It is DEFTONES’ mission to raise significant funds to help ensure Chi’s recovery by playing two very special benefit shows in Hollywood on November 19 and November 20, and also by launching a benefit auction in conjunction with CharityBuzz.com.

The auction features many special items generously donated by an array of DEFTONES’ friends, including METALLICA, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, BLINK 182, HIM, SLAYER and many more.
