Four days shy of two years since their last U.S. show, Coldplay returned to these shores last night, performing at the annual fundraiser for the Grammy Foundation at UCLA. Two of the five new songs the band played from their upcoming fifth album – “Charlie Brown” and “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” – were aired on Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, so the show included a walk-on by the talk show host to introduce the band during their fourth and fifth songs. For whatever reason, the band performed both numbers again later in the show.

Coldplay took the stage and immediately launched into a new song, “Hurts Like Heaven,” as strings of confetti rained down from above the stage. Different kinds of confetti would be launched from the stage a number of times during the evening and lasers used at other points in the show.

The two other new songs were “Major Minus” and “Us Against the World.” Frontman Chris Martin introduced the latter by saying, “This is a new song. If you don’t like it, it doesn’t matter. If you don’t like it, blog about it or something.”

During the encore, Martin led the band and audience in Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab,” which they fittingly segued into “Fix You.”

It could be a happy holiday season for Coldplay fans: Chris Martin says his band hopes to have a new record out by December!

The chart-topping Brits are currently recording in a converted London church on the follow up to 2008’s Viva La Vida, or Death and All His Friends.

“We feel more excited about making new music than ever,” Martin told website Globo.com in a recent video interview. Watch it below!

While in the studio, the band is taking extra precautions to keep the tunes from leaking, a problem it faced with Viva La Vida. The album surfaced online a week before its street date. And last summer, nearly a year after its release, unfinished studio demos from the album also made their way onto the internet.
