We had our hearts broken by losing Layne and losing ourselves” Alice In Chains’ guitarist Jerry Cantrell says of the band’s long road back from the death of singer Layne Staley in 2002.  The heartbreak led the band to eventually recruit new singer William DuVall and record new album “Black Gives Way To Blue,” which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 this month and which spawned a title track that went all the way to No. 1 on the Rock Songs chart. The heart-centric album cover, Cantrell explains in a video interview with Billboard.com, is no coincidence.

U2 will stream an entire concert live on the YouTube video sharing site this weekend, the Irish band said on their website. Sunday’s show at the Rose Bowl in California is already a sellout, with an audience of 96,000 expected, and U2 said it would be the first time for such a large show to be streamed live.

“The band has wanted to do something like this for a long time,” said manager Paul McGuinness in a statement.

“As we’re filming the LA show, it’s the perfect opportunity to extend the party beyond the stadium. Fans often travel long distances to come to see U2 — this time U2 can go to them, globally.”

Google Inc’s YouTube will stream the concert across five continents, and two replays will be available after the live feed — on www.U2.com and YouTube.

Video footage of guitarist Warren DeMartini of Californian rockers RATT laying down a solo on the band’s new song “Lost Weekend” at a studio in Virginia Beach, Virginia in June 2009 can be viewed below.

RATT’s first studio CD in 10 years was produced by Michael “Elvis” Baskette, whose credits include PUDDLE OF MUDD, CHEVELLE, SALIVA, LIMP BIZKIT, ALTER BRIDGE and THREE DAYS GRACE, to name a few. Tentatively due in January 2010 via Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records, the effort — which has been described by singer Stephen Pearcy as a cross between 1984’s “Out Of The Cellar” and 1985’s “Invasion Of Your Privacy” — marked the first time the band had stepped outside of Los Angeles to track a new CD in 20-plus years.

PARAMORE-1PARAMORE-2

As I approached the House of Blues it quickly became apparent why this was an all ages show.  The 300-plus crowd that lined up across from Fenways’ Green Monsta was mostly pre-adolescent girls giddy with school yard glee in anticipation of their first concert.

The last thing I want is to be in a room with thousands of screaming little girls but then I thought it is good to see these kids rocking to PARAMORE instead of the manufactured Jonas Brothers or fellow Disney phenom Miley Cyrus.

Lead singer and tween role model HALEY WILLIAMS’ comfort level with her rising stardom was immediately apparent as she and her ensemble confidently tore through the opening “Ignorance,” from the band’s latest release BRAND NEW EYES. Cheerful, spunky and ruthlessly energetic, Williams bounced around stage with infectious enthusiasm.

PARAMORE showcased their musical maturity with new high octane tunes including Careful” and “Decode” and the stripped away folksy acoustic “Misguided Ghosts. The new material went over strong and they still create the perfect punk indulgence for mainstream teenagers.

The band dug into their sophomore breakthrough album RIOT! to deliver pop-punk confections like “CrushCrushCrush,” “That’s What You Get” and crowd pleaser “Misery Business” left rebellious tweens salivating for more.

It’s become a visible trend for bands on the indie label Fueled by Ramen to become emo rock stars as evident by Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Gym Class Heroes – and now Tennessee pop-punk act PARAMORE who are finally getting its chance to shine displayed why it deserves to break through the Warped Tour ranks and become a multi-platinum selling act.

Spilling out to Lansdowne Street after the show offered up a flashback to an 8th grade dance as parents lined up in their cars and on the sidewalk eagerly awaiting for their kids to exit after a night of candy-coated good clean fun.

Wilco

Like any other rock band making music today, Wilco has to deal with some haters on the internet. But not many of those bands get the chance to address the feedback. When Jeff Tweedy and Co. stopped by their hometown of Chicago for a two-night stand, The Onion’s A.V. Club decided to give Tweedy a forum. His tone in the interview, published late last week, is not as defensive as one might expect, either.

“People really think narrowly when it comes [to]…the idea that something has to be aggressive or avant grade, or atonal, even, to be a challenge,” he told The A.V. Club. “I’ve found it to be the exact opposite. We literally put 15 minutes of noise on a record that did not raise an eyebrow, but if you make a pop song with Feist on it, people are going to cry like the sky’s falling.”
