090822-pearl-jam-mainPearl Jam have a habit of handpicking various indie rock underdogs as their opening acts, like Ted Leo, who was set to open the first stop on the Seattle band’s North American tour Friday night in Toronto. Sadly, weather prevented Leo from making his 7:30 P.M. set time. No worries. Pearl Jam had an excellent back-up opening band on hand: Pearl Jam.

Or, rather, a coffeehouse open-mic version of Pearl Jam. In lieu of Leo, PJ frontman Eddie Vedder took the stage by himself, treating early arrivals to a pair of Neil Young covers (”Sugar Mountain” and “The Needle and the Damage Done”), followed by a two-song solo set from guitarist Mike McCready, and a Johnny Thunders tribute courtesy of Stone Gossard, who contributed a folkie overhaul of the late New York Doll’s junkie hymn “You Can’t Put Your Arm Around a Memory.”

tyler-pollstarAerosmith frontman Steven Tyler recently released a statement thanking police and others who came to his aid after he fell off of the stage while doing the “Tyler Shuffle” at the Famous Buffalo Chip campground during the Sturgis Motorcyle Rally.

It was the tumble that tumbled the tour. Tyler’s injuries resulting from the fall, including 20 stitches to his head and a broken shoulder, caused the band to cancel the rest of its tour. In addition to thanking police, Tyler also thanked the band’s crew and helicopter flight crew “for getting me outta there before I bled to death” as well as the doctors and nurses who treated him at the hospital.

PJTributes to Michael Jackson have come by the barrelful in recent weeks, but rarely from a source as unexpected as Pearl Jam.

Wrapping their five-date European mini-tour last night at London’s O2 Arena, the same venue where Jackson was to have performed his 50-date headlining run this summer, Eddie Vedder launched into a short but heartfelt ode to the King of Pop. The singer performed a quick version of “Ben,” Jackson’s chart-topping 1972 single from the soundtrack to Williard, a film about a killer rat, before launching into Pearl Jam’s own “Rats,” whose final verse pays homage to “Ben”: “Ben, the two of us need look no more.”
