Noisecreep spoke with founding guitarist Rudolf Schenker and asked him about the upcoming farewell tour, the possibility of an album with his brother Michael, and what other non-Scorpions projects he had coming our way in the future.

You are kicking off your 2010 tour with eight shows in Germany this May. What can we expect in terms of set lists? Will it change nightly?

The big hits will be there nightly. You have to play that stuff because Scorpions fans demand it, and we love it. We’ll also be playing some rarities from the catalog. The new album has so many perfect songs for the stage. But look, we understand that we can’t throw in nine to 10 new tracks in the set list, because it would get rather boring for some people. I think we’re just going to play three to four of the new songs every night and rotate them. That will all depend on the country we’re playing and reactions.

Will Herman Rarebell, your brother Michael or any other of your ex-members be joining you for these last shows?

We played with Herman, my brother, and Uli Jon Roth at Wacken Open Air a few years ago. It was released as a DVD. It was an amazing night! I’m not sure what the plans are for anything like that on this tour, but we had a great time in that performance. It hasn’t been released in the States yet.

What other projects are you working on for the future?

I wrote a book called ‘Rock Your Life’ which is out now in German. It’s about my life and the Scorpions. We did everything wrong and still got it right [laughter]. You see so many bands trying to do what they’ve been told the right thing is, but I don’t believe in that. You really need to do things your own way. We came from Germany and people didn’t think a band from there could do this kind of music. And we’ve proven them wrong. The book is about that. I hope to get it out in other languages soon.

Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean is to make her recorded debut, singing as part of a “gang” on a forthcoming album by Amanda Palmer. Bean will appear on the debut by Evelyn Evelyn, a project by the Dresden Dolls frontwoman and her bandmate Jason Webley.

The Evelyn Evelyn concept is, er, high. Palmer and Webley provide musical accompaniment to a pair of “conjoined twins who … spent their lives trapped in the circus industry”. According to the album’s principal conceit, Lyn and Eva Neville are real people, with a real Twitter account, born in 1985 and sharing “three legs, two arms, two hearts, three lungs and a single liver”. In spite of the gussied-up MySpace page, we suspect Palmer and Webley have been having fun in their dress-up box.

I Am Ozzy

I AM OZZY

(Grand Central Publishing Hardcover; $26.99; January 25, 2010)

Take what you thought was “rock and roll excess,” double it, and you still would not be anywhere near the dizzying life of Ozzy Osbourne. Born into a life so poor that the entire family slept in one room, music was his salvation, and his band Black Sabbath went on to change the musical landscape forever. The inevitable sex and drugs came along with along with the rock and roll lifestyle, and Ozzy soon fell into an epic relationship with booze and chemicals.

The stories of Ozzy’s days on the road are now those of legend—biting the head off of a live bat, the tragic plane crash that took the life of his best friend and writing partner—but few know about the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of hard living. I AM OZZY is the heavy metal pioneer’s unbelievable story told, for the first time, in Ozzy’s hilarious, witty, and inimitable voice. In the end it was love that saved him: the love of his wife Sharon and kids Aimee, Kelly, and Jack.

About the Author

Ozzy Osbourne was born in Aston, Birmingham, in 1948. He has sold over a hundred million records both with Black Sabbath and as an award-winning solo artist. He has five children and lives with his wife, Sharon, in California and Buckinghamshire.

spoonSpoon are a quartet from Austin with roots in what now seems like a distant golden era: the early-Nineties zenith of alternative rock. In 1993, the year singer-guitarist-songwriter Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno founded the group, Nirvana were still a working band, Beck was hot with “Loser” and Smashing Pumpkins were in the Top 10 with Siamese Dream. Daniel, Eno, keyboard player Eric Harvey and bassist Rob Pope are now in a mainstream of their own. Their records don’t go platinum or anywhere near Top 40 radio, but albums such as 2002’s Kill the Moonlight and 2005’s Gimme Fiction are routinely plundered for film scores and TV shows. With that exposure, hardy touring and the loyalty of indie-rock fans, Spoon are big enough to be in the Top 10 themselves — 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga debuted there — and headline rooms as big as New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
